One of the most powerful lessons from Extreme Ownership is the principle of “Simple.” Leaders often fall into the trap of believing complexity equals strategy, but in reality, complexity hurts execution. Your team can’t act on what they don’t understand.


Great leaders simplify the plan and communicate it clearly so everyone understands not just what to do, but why it matters.


When communication is clear, decisions get made, people take action, and accountability becomes easier to track. The leader’s job is to remove confusion so others can move.

Take one project or goal your team is working on right now. Write the purpose and plan in one sentence, short enough for anyone on your team to repeat.


Then share it at your next meeting.


Ask:

“Is there anything unclear about this?”

“What would make the project simpler to execute?”


A clear message gets repeated; a complicated one gets lost.


Reflect


Am I creating clarity or complexity for my team?


  • Where have I added steps, meetings, or jargon that don’t move the mission forward?

  • How often do I confirm understanding, not just assume it?

  • What would happen if I focused more on clarity than control?
